Training & Events

The Disaster Recovery Ministry offers trainings to assist churches and individuals to prepare and respond to disaster. We are continuing to offer in person trainings by request. Please contact The Disaster Recovery Ministry to learn more.

"There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but the same God works all of them in all men."
1 Corinthians 12: 4-6
An Early Response Team (ERT) is a self-contained team invited to a disaster-affected area to provide specialized physical, emotional, and spiritual assistance to survivors. ERTs help with specific needs in the early days after a disaster.

Attendees will:
1. Be required to pass a background check prior to attending
2. Receive an updated ERT manual and materials
3. Take a test at the end of the class
4. Receive an ERT t-shirt and a badge

Come learn about where United Methodists are involved, what is a disaster, how to get prepared for a disaster, what we can do when a disaster strikes.  Attendees will also learn how the disaster response plan is activated, how to be a caring presence to communities facing disaster recovery and hear stories about how we do not harm the recovery process for individuals.

During this class, our trainers will explain the roles Early Response Teams play in the early days after a disaster.  You will learn to provide a Christian presence, be a part of the caring ministry of “listeners”, take steps to prevent further damage to a family’s personal property by  tarping, flood clean-out, debris removal, and also learn to help manage donated materials, gather information, or do other things needed in the community, and observe survivor’s needs and report those to the local disaster operations.

Teams are registered with the Disaster Recovery Ministry of the Florida Conference and Disaster Recovery coordinates team placement with local officials to get help where it is needed most after a disaster.

Training is $15 per person. Participants must be at least 18 years old.

Don't see a training in your district? Fill out the ERT Interest Form, and we will let you know when future ERT classes are scheduled.
